The coast of western Sardinia, overlooking a vast sea sometimes agitated by the powerful mistral, enriched by often uncontaminated nature and fantastic sunsets, invites those who visit it to contemplate and come into direct contact with nature.
Canonically included between the town of Bosa and the Masua stack, it extends for around 80 kilometres, and alternates an impressive variety of coastal landscapes. From the beach of Bosa Marina, one of the very rare dark sand beaches in Sardinia, to the impressive white cliffs of Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, from the large humid areas of the Sinis peninsula to the desert dunes of Piscinas, ending with the Pan di Zucchero, this stretch of coast offers an impressive assortment of varied and particular natural landscapes.
When you visit the western coast of Sardinia what certainly strikes you first and foremost is the extraordinary color combination.
The blue here is truly ultramarine. Caribbean-type beaches are rare, the sea opens up with views that could recall the ocean. The coast, as we said before, offers everything.
From beaches nestled between dazzling white cliffs like that of S’archittu to long white sand beaches that are discovered during the journey such as Mari Ermi, Portixeddu or Plagemesu.
And then waterfalls overlooking the sea like that of Cabu Nieddu, the large fishpond of Cabras which makes you think of being on the Adriatic while in the immediate vicinity there is the enchanting and rightly famous beach of is Arutas, and then Porto Flavia which seems a set built for a film.
However, if we want to find a constant on the western coast of Sardinia, this is its proximity to a hinterland that offers an authentic and never banal vision of the island.
We could start with historical remains that span all eras: the grandiose nuragic complex of Barumini, the Phoenician city of Tharros, the Roman baths of Fordongianus, the early Christian churches of Sinis, the medieval castle of Bosa, to end with the post-industrial landing of Porto Flavia. The western coast offers a cross-section of the history of Sardinia which retraces its phases in an almost analytical way. The monuments are well preserved and usable, and it is possible to deepen your knowledge by visiting well-designed museums such as that little jewel that is the Giovanni Marongiu of Cabras, or the spectacular one of Miniera Montevecchio.
Or you could alternate the visit to the beaches with one of the many small towns found along the coast: in the Bosano area, unmissable are Flussio, famous for its Malvasia or Tinnura, one of the Italian capitals of murals. In Montiferru you can visit Tresnuraghes or the enchanting Santu Lussurgiu, while in the Oristano area Morgongiori is worth a visit, famous for its Neolithic monuments, the Monte Arci Park and the artisanal production of lorighittas. Proceeding south, the characteristic village of Arbus, not far from the marina of the same name where it is also possible to see the Sardinian deer and which has become famous for its curved blade knives.
In summary, the western coast of Sardinia offers various but interrelated motivations
Uncontaminated Natural Landscapes: a coast and a landscape that at times seems not to have known human presence… if it weren’t for the roads to get there
Historical and Archaeological Wealth: an overview of human activity in Sardinia, from the Neolithic to the present day
Authenticity and Local Culture: small towns where tradition is simply the everyday way of life
Where to stay on your visit to the west coast of Sardinia?
We can only recommend our Hotel La Baja, a great four-star hotel located in Santa Caterina Pittinuri. It overlooks the beach of the seaside village of the same name and is a short distance from the beach of Is Arenas and the famous beach of S’Archittu, characterized by the peculiar ivory rock in the shape of an arch, sculpted by the sea and the wind.
A stay in Santa Caterina di Pittinuri offers breathtaking views and enchanting colored sunsets, white cliffs, splendid and quiet beaches, small villages with intact traditions and protected nature reserves.
We are waiting for you!
