The best beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo: which ones to choose.

The ten best beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo.

Is it possible to count only 10 beautiful beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo?
Undoubtedly the undertaking is arduous. The stretch of coast that extends from Razza di Junco to Cala Girgolu includes about 50 km of jagged coasts, large beaches and coves of a few tens of meters, with a very varied exposure to the wind (and those who know Sardinia, know how much this is important), with very different seabed and sand granularity.
However, these beaches, which are badly counted exceed 50, have a common element. The entire west coast of Sardinia rests on a huge granite base, geologically very ancient. Consequently all these beaches are white or almost white.

Now, from North to South, let’s get to know better what we believe are the ten best beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo, all easily accessible from our Hotel Felix Olbia e Hotel Residence Porto San Paolo.

For simplicity, we are going to divide the beaches into the area they belong to:

Porto Rotondo

Golfo Aranci

Olbia Città

Porto San Paolo

The beaches of Porto Rotondo

The area of Porto Rotondo (which is part of the Municipality of Olbia) is perhaps the trendiest one we’re going to visit on our list.
Generally oriented to the south-west, they are characterized by excellent services (restaurants, bathing establishments) but often very crowded especially in August.
In our opinion, these are the most beautiful beaches in the Porto Rotondo area:

Rena Bianca beach

The beach of Rena Bianca it certainly promises what it claims. In fact in Gallura it means precisely white sand. On summer days with full sun it almost glitters, this beach with medium-fine-grained sand and surrounded by low dunes that naturally delimit it. Spectacular selfie backdrop of a perfect turquoise and that remains low for a long stretch, therefore excellent for families with children. Enchanting panorama with the Gulf of Cugnana in front, while on the left side you can admire the islets of Mortorio and Spread.

Portisco beach

The spiaggia di Portisco it owes its well-deserved fame to two factors. The first is the extraordinary quality of the water which, not surprisingly, makes the bay where the beach and the namesake are located porticciolo turisitico di Marina di Portisco famous: it has been in fact a Blue flag continuously for several years.
The second is the strategic position: it is located a few kilometers from the entrance to the Costa Smeralda, and is very visible from the panoramic road from which you can admire both the beach and the marina.
Portisco also has a bottom that slopes slowly, but on its left it has a cliff that can be interesting for snorkeling. Those who love swimming can also venture to the islet of the same name which is a few hundred meters away.

Spiaggia Ira

The beach, whose name in Sardinian is Sa Rena Manna, is one of the best known in the Porto Rotondo area and the north-east coast of Sardinia, often frequented by Italian and international VIPs. As proof of this, the name by which the beach is known today is precisely taken by the actress Ira von Fürstenberg who had the villa overlooking this beach. It has very fine sand and a very clear seabed. Very crowded especially in the months of July and August, it is equipped with all the services, of a high level (and price).

Spiagge di Golfo Aranci

The beautiful village of Golfo Aranci, overlooking the gulf of the same name, it is full of beautiful beaches that are also found within the town. The name is the Italian distortion of “Golfo di li ranci” (in Gallura gulf of crabs), which betrays its seafaring vocation. In fact, there is an active fishing port that supplies the restaurants in the area.
Golfo Aranci is easily reachable in just over 20 minutes from ours Hotel Felix Olbia

In our opinion, the beaches not to be missed in the Golfo Aranci area are:

Cala Moresca

Imagine a sheltered cove, which can be reached on foot after a walk of just under a kilometer with a view of a sea of “Sardinian” beauty and an incredible view of the islet of Figarolo. So a backdrop that, depending on the time of day, can become dark green, blue or light blue. Behind it, the possibility of trekking with routes of varying difficulty. Here, you are at Cala Moresca, which thus becomes one of the 10 beautiful beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo. It is recommended to visit it early in the morning to fully enjoy its beauty.

Cala Sassari

The beach of Cala Sassari it is easily identifiable from the coastal road that from Olbia reaches Golfo Aranci. This beautiful white sand beach is quite wide, equipped with all services and is also excellent for the little ones because of the very clear seabed, which remains low for many meters. Surrounded on all sides by Mediterranean scrub, it is definitely one of the most popular in the area.

Beaches of Olbia city

Even if Olbia does not have a real urban beach, 15 minutes from the city center it is possible to find what for us are the two most beautiful beaches in Olbia, which certainly deserve to be included in our list and which are about 12-15 minutes from ours Hotel Felix Olbia.

Pittulongu

For an Olbia’s citizen Pittulongu it is simply La Playa, the beach. This beautiful beach of medium-grained white sand is more than a kilometer long, is equipped with all services starting with public transport, and is the typical example of a beach that suits everyone. You can find the trendy restaurant as well as groups of young people, families with small children (the seabed is shallow for several meters) as well as fishermen who find their space on the far right side that ends with a beautiful cliff. Pittulongu pleases everyone, and this is enough for us to include it among the 10 beautiful beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo.

Porto Istana

The most common first-time sensation in Porto Istana is that of having seen that sea many times thinking “it is not really like that”. But it really is. The 4 coves that make up this locality stand out for a truly remarkable set of colors. Starting from the sea, a very clear, transparent and shallow seabed for tens of meters puts it on the same level as the most beautiful Caribbean beaches, but the very fine and very clear sand of the beach, the cliffs that go towards the pink and the decisive green of a scrub luxuriant Mediterranean relocate it to our Mediterranean setting. Equipped with all services, this beach located south of the city is equally accessible from both Hotel Felix Olbia sia dal Hotel Residence Porto San Paolo.

Beaches of Porto San Paolo

The area of Porto San Paolo, halfway between Olbia and San Teodoro, it is characterized by the presence of sheltered coves and the presence of beautiful granite cliffs eroded and smoothed by the sea and the wind. In our opinion, the most beautiful beaches of Porto San Paolo, reachable in less than 10 minutes from our Hotel Residence Porto San Paolo, are:

Punta Don Diego

The beach of punta Don Diego, not large in size, however, it has at least 2 excellent reasons why it is worth visiting, and we are not talking about the transparency of the sea or the white sand, we take those for granted. This beach is fairly sheltered from almost all winds and has an unrepeatable view of the island of Tavolara, which towers over the sea with its 560 meters almost vertically, when viewed from this angle.
Given the modest size of the beach, it is strongly recommended to go early in the morning to take the best positions.

Porto Taverna

The beautiful beach of Porto Taverna it is the largest in Porto San Paolo and the most popular with residents. It is the easiest beach to reach thanks to two large car parks (the wooden promenade that connects the farthest to the beach is very nice) and offers all beach services. The medium-grained sand and a crystalline seabed that slopes very gently make it an excellent beach for families.

Cala Girgolu

The beach of Cala Girgolu (or even Cala Ghjlgolu) is undoubtedly one of the most photographed among the 10 beautiful beaches between Olbia and Porto San Paolo. The peculiarity of this area of small beaches is given by the sea of incredible transparency and the curious shape of the rocks, which marine erosion has shaped with surprising results such as the highly photographed turtle rock and the originals “tafoni” that can be admired in this area.
