How to find a windless beach in Olbia?

Looking for a windless beach in Sardinia, in Olbia in particular, might seem like an impossible task. Yet it is easier than you think.

From a quick glance on any map, the coastal strip of Olbia extends for approximately 35 kilometers along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. This calculation also includes Golfo Aranci, which is in fact surrounded by the Olbia municipal area.
This stretch of coast is characterized by a variety of beaches, coves, coves and cliffs, which make it one of the most fascinating and visited coastal areas of the island.

But that exposes it, fatally, to the predominant wind in Sardinia: the Mistral.
This wind coming from the north-west has all its meaning in its name. Since the times when navigation is the wind par excellence: it is the “main of all currents, the master of navigation” is found written in the old pilot books.

It blows on the island practically all year round, with varying intensity. In summer it is particularly welcome at night, because it refreshes the air.
But at the beach things get more complicated, and can make some more exposed beaches less suitable for swimming or relaxing.
It might be worth thinking about booking a hotel in Olbia with a pool in advance, but more on that later.

Beaches sheltered from the mistral in Olbia. Are they really there?

The answer is yes, there are.
First of all, the eastern coast of Sardinia does not take the mistral head-on. This means that the intensity of the wind will still be dampened compared to, for example, the western coast of the island.
Furthermore, several beaches are sheltered by hills and rocks behind them, and this greatly reduces the power of the wind.
Lastly, Olbia has a certain number of beaches and coves which, thanks to their geographical orientation, are almost immune to the mistral.

Here you will find a short list of 5 beaches from south to north of Olbia that are quite sheltered from the mistral

Pittulongu Beach (or “La Playa”)
the largest beach in Olbia is located north of the city center. Its long shoreline has equipped areas and equally large areas of free beach. In case of weak and moderate mistral it is an excellent solution even in the very high season. Its shallow waters and white, medium-grained sand make it a place truly suitable for everyone.
