“Workation”, a combination of “work” and “vacation”. The evolution of increasingly flexible working conditions and the events connected with the pandemic have accelerated the transformation from smart working, which is now becoming popular also in Italy, to agile working, but on holiday.
In 2020, about five million Italian workers have gone onto smart working. About 2.5 million in the public sector and, it is estimated, another 2 million in the private sector, but there are studies that speak of as many as 8 million people wfh. 2020 has given a notable boost to a way of working that big companies have been trying out for some time. A study carried out by Milan Politecnico’s Smartworking Observatory indicates that the benefits of remote work for companies include an increase in productivity of around 15% per employee, a 20% reduction in sick leave and a 30% reduction in office running costs. As far as employees are concerned, remote working is appreciated above all because it allows for a better work-life balance and has a positive impact on physical and mental health. That’s not all however – for 41%, the attractiveness of the work environment has an impact on the quality of work, for 33% it improves productivity, and for 28% it helps creativity. So more than 66% of those interviewed are planning to work remotely away from their home and for a fairly extended time.
