What to do in Ogliastra when it rains

Ogliastra, beautiful even when it rains

If you are on holiday in Ogliastra and the weather does not bode well, don’t worry. In fact, the land of centenarians offers not only breathtaking beaches, but also numerous activities that will allow you to spend a pleasant holiday.

And if obviously you have imagined your holiday in Ogliastra among the transparent waters of its sea, you will be able to discover here that different solutions can easily be found on what to do in Ogliastra when there is bad weather.

In fact, this ancient land is rich in millenary cultural finds, offers interesting proposals for art lovers and has recently been specializing in the wine sector.

Starting from the historical aspects, in an era (1,500/1,000 BC) where the rest of Italy does not produce noteworthy historical traces, the Nuragic era produced a civilization for about five centuries that built about 7,000 Nuraghe. Sardinian warriors are represented in the Pharaonic tombs among the sea peoples who attacked the Egyptian empire, and frequent trade with Greek cities suggests that the island was an important player in the history of the western Mediterranean at that time.

For its part, Ogliastra is home to some of the most important nuraghe in Sardinia.
The best known is certainly the Nuraghe Arrubiu, located in Orroli, about an hour’s drive from our Felix Hotels Galanias in Bari Sardo. The “Red Giant” takes its name from the reddish lichens that cover part of the majestic complex made up of 21 towers, with the main keep 15 meters high today but originally double in size. It was the basis of a large settlement and an important trading center (Mycenaean vases have been found there) which had its maximum splendor between 1,400 and 900 BC. A real city of the Bronze Age with the tomb of the Giants of the Sword attached. It can be visited all year round, preferably with a guide. In the village you can visit a small but complete museum that traces its history.

Another beautiful nuragic complex that is half an hour from Bari Sardo is that of Nuraghe Serbissi , in Osini. This Nuragic village, built using  pre-existing rocks, is made up of a main tower and three secondary ones enclosed by walls. One of its peculiarities is that below the nuraghe there is a limestone cave, with two entrances.
Are you more interested in the contemporary than in the past?

In Ulassai, an enchanting village in internal Ogliastra also known for its famous waterfalls, there is a museum called the Art Station. It is a contemporary art museum which was dedicated to the work of Maria Lai. Thanks to the donation by the artist originally from the town, this museum which has the particularity of being located in the premises of the old railway station (hence the name) is a true compendium of the artist’s work.
It is less than half an hour from our Felix Hotels Galanias.
