Ogliastra and Cannonau, an ancient but very current story

Cannonau is the wine that most identifies with the character of Ogliastra, its traditions and its mysteries

In this blog we have already written about Ogliastra for many reasons:
there was talk of the beauty of its sea or what to do when the weather is not the best, its sweets and the particular longevity of its people.

However, if an element brought by man characterizes this area both in environmental and cultural terms, it is wine.
But not just any.
The wine that has been produced and drunk here for centuries (it seems even millennia) permeates and characterizes Sardinian culture. We are talking about the Cannonau.
Like many other things that have to do with Sardinia and Ogliastra in particular, the origin of Cannonau is much debated.
Some genetic studies suggest that Cannonau could be a local grape variety originally from Sardinia, while others suggest that it could have Spanish or Provencal origins. Some researchers believe that the vine was introduced to Sardinia by the Phoenicians or Romans, during their commercial and cultural influences in the area.
Certainly Cannonau shares with the Spanish grape Grenache, also known as Garnacha. some morphological and genetic characteristics, which could indicate a possible relationship between the two vines.
Regardless of its true origins, Cannonau has become a distinctive vine of great importance in Sardinian and Ogliastra wine production in particular.

What makes Cannonau unique is its adaptation to the Ogliastra terroir. The Mediterranean climate, calcareous soils and exposure to the sun favor the ripening of the grapes and the concentration of their distinctive aromas and flavours.

The wine obtained is a robust and full-bodied red, characterized by a high content of polyphenols, which gives it an intense color and a fruity and spicy taste. Cannonau grapes are rich in antioxidants, which makes the wine particularly healthy and appreciated for its health benefits. Here the connections with the extraordinary longevity of the inhabitants of Ogliastra could be highlighted, but it would be all too obvious.

Ogliastra celebrates its wine

Until a few decades ago, this relationship between Sardinia and its wine of choice was basically known from the verses of D’Annuzio who celebrated the cannonau of Oliena.

Today in villages such as Barisardo, Triei, Cardedu, Loceri and of course Jerzu there are numerous wineries that offer tastings and experiences that illustrate the history of this wine and of the territory.

Events have arisen such as the Jerzu wine festival in which the traditional openings of the cellars are combined with equally pleasant cultural and musical events.
